Clearwell Farm History

Clearwell Farm was established by David Phillips' grandparents 110 years ago, his ancestors can be traced to farms in the area from the 1600’s.

Originally a tenanted farm it was derelict, abandoned  by the previous tenants whose children had emigrated. Most of the land was growing Gorse and Bracken. Great effort was made to bring the land back into production during the First World War. Slowly, with solely men and horses the land was cleared and improved. Crops were grown on the farm to feed the growing populations of Cardiff, Newport and the surrounding mining Valleys, providing much appreciated fresh fresh vegetables. At this time importing from the rest of the world was unthinkable and logistically impossible.

The farm flourished providing local people jobs and producing fresh produce and meat to local shops.

In the early 1990s fortunes quickly changed , the world globalised, traditional farms producing and selling locally had to compete with shipments of grain from around the world, often produced to lower standards. At this time the supermarkets came to dominate the retail of food in the UK and transport around the world became possible. Clearwell quickly became unprofitable and David the third generation now in charge, made the decision to diversify.

Cereals

Around 200 acres are cropped with a traditional rotation including Wheat, Barley, Oat, Oilseeds and Linseed being  grown to the Red tractor assurance standard.

These crops supply firms who make amongst other things biscuits, museli, beer, cooking oils and many other products. Most crops stay in the UK, but some wheat and the linseed for oil will be exported to France through our local co-operative.

Nothing is wasted and the byproduct straw is used for bedding by local livestock farmers.

Cider Orchards

Three orchards have been established to grow varieties of apples that were traditional to the Monmouthshire area of Wales. Dabinett, Harry Masters and Yarlington Mill are supplied to Williams Brothers of Bedwas and Three Saints of Chepstow. Both these artisan cidermakers have won awards with apples grown at Clearwell farm.

Sunflowers & Maize Maze

In 2020, we opened our first Sunflower Maize Maze — offering a much-needed outdoor event during the height of COVID-19.

Since then, our mazes have grown bigger every year, reaching up to 14 acres in 2022!
We love welcoming visitors to explore, relax, and enjoy the stunning views and peaceful atmosphere of our farm and home each summer.

Pumpkins

First planted in 2020, Clearwell Farm now grows over 50,000 pumpkins every year!

We take great pride in the quality of our pumpkins. By using a method called transplanting, we get ahead of the weeds naturally — helping us grow a wide variety of strong, healthy pumpkins for you to choose from.

Christmas Tree's

David planted his first Norwegian Spruce Christmas Tree in 2008. This diversification has then led the farm to where it is today, realising the potential of being able to sell Clearwell Grown products directly to the consumer, it was our first farm event for the public.
